Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
What is Applied Behavior Analysis?
ABA is the application, assessment, and design of environmental modifications to yield socially significant changes in an individual’s behavior. The ABA method utilizes functional analysis, direct observation, and measurement of how an individual’s environment and behavior are related then determines what changes can be made to the environment that will most likely result in a desirable change in the behavior. Simply put, our behavior is shaped by interacting with the world around us. In other words, we all learn by doing “stuff.”Why ABA?
ABA is widely considered as an effective and safe treatment method for individuals with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities and other diagnoses. ABA is grounded on data-based, scientific and applied research that has been conducted over several years. This research has been validated in treatment clinics, schools, and other environments in the United States and even internationally. Over the years, it has been recognized by various federal and state agencies, including the U.S. Surgeon General and the New York State Department of Health. Over the last decade, there has been an increase in the use of ABA to help individuals with autism and other disabilities so that they can live productive and happy lives. What happens in an ABA session?
The basic philosophy of ABA is that people learn by doing stuff. Therefore, ABA sessions involve creating an environment that enables someone to learn. Sessions are designed to produce positive changes in social functioning and practical skills while reducing disruptive and problematic behaviors. Behavior Plan Development and Implementation
ABT provides Behavioral Support services which include the development of an initial behavioral support plan and ongoing behavioral support. ABT will perform a comprehensive assessment; develop strategies to support the individual based upon the assessment; and provide training for individuals, staff, parents, and caregivers on the implementation of the strategies.
Behavior Support Services may be provided in the office of the Behavioral Specialist, the individual’s home, or in local public community environments necessary for the provision of the Behavioral Support Services.
Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)
Identify the “Why”
Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) conducted in homes, day programs and community settings include an interview, records review, direct observation, and data collection methods to identify the function or “reason” a behavior problem occurs. Once a function has been identified, a treatment based on the results of the assessment is developed and implemented to decrease the problem behavior by replacing it with a socially appropriate behavior that serves the same function.
Behavioral Teleconsulting Services
When On-Site Support is Not the Best Option
We offer consultation using video conferencing, telephone interviews, video data collection, and other technological advancements to increase the effectiveness of treatment and reduce client reactivity. This increases our ability to serve individuals who live in remote locations, who engage in challenging behavior at unusual times of the day or night, or who don’t engage in challenging behavior when the behavior specialist is present.
