Direct Support Professionals
General Description
Direct Support Professionals (DSP) are responsible for providing individually focused compassionate care and assistance to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder and/ or mental health challenges. The DSP will also encourage growth towards independence in activities of daily living, socialization, community involvement, and support in the expression of choices.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Improve and respect the lives of individuals who have physical, mental, and developmental disabilities
- Assist in the implementation of individual plans and behavioral plan goals
- Update individual case notes daily with feedback regarding the strengths, skills, and performance needs of individuals
- Help individuals develop appropriate social, behavioral, housekeeping, and daily life skills
- Assist with daily living activities, including preparing meals and assisting with personal hygiene
- Assist individuals in the pursuit of recreational, social, and community activities based on their preferences and individual goals
- Provide supervision and guidance for individuals during skill-building activities
- Assist and encourage individuals in the establishment of social networks
- Develop a rapport with individuals and cultivate a safe and supportive relationship
- Ensure individuals’ rights are protected
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED required
- 2+ years’ experience providing direct care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and acceptable motor vehicle record preferred
- Must pass Pennsylvania Criminal Background Check and drug test
- Possess or be able to acquire certification in First Aid and CPR
